Within limits, each of the entrained bed gasification processes can process a wide range of coal. However, only the dry feed processes are really economically capable of handling a 100% low rank fuel, such as lignite or petroleum coke. So the economics of long term coal supply must be carefully considered.
Other considerations — cost, footprint, technology maturity, etc. — will also influence the technology choice.
