Gasification is the cleanest commercially available means of using coal or other heavy feedstocks such as refinery bottoms that have too many contaminants to allow their direct combustion without costly downstream environmental controls. The high reaction temperature in a gasifier eliminates the formation of hydrocarbons heavier than methane and makes gasification the preferred choice for low-grade liquids and solids including waste materials such as plastics, motor oils, and sludges.

The product of the reaction is a clean syngas consisting mostly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. It can be used directly as fuel for a combustion turbine in an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle or IGCC plant for the production of electricity or converted into several products such as high-purity hydrogen, chemical feedstock or synthetic natural gas.
